Yvonne Carignan, former director of Special Collections at the Lloyd House, will speak about social libraries in Virginia before the Civil War using The Alexandria Library Company as the premier example in Virginia. A significant number of its library books, its Record Book, collection catalogs, and other materials survive to tell the Library Company's story today. Ms. Carignan will set Alexandria Library Company's remarkable history in the context of antebellum social libraries in the rest of the state and will offer some surprises about the company's activities and records. The speaker will share evidence of the Alexandria Library Company along with patterns emerging from this research project to document Virginia/West Virginia social libraries comprehensively before the Civil War.
