Start Time: 1:30 PM
End Time: 3:30 PM
Description:
Special Collections invites you to hear author Garrett Peck speak about his latest book "Walt Whitman in Washington, DC." We often forget that Walt Whitman lived in Washington between 1863-1873. Supporting himself by clerking in government agencies, he spent much of his time visiting soldiers in local hospitals, performing nursing duties and writing letters home for wounded or illiterate soldiers. In return his experiences here inspired letters, articles, and poems. He later said that his time here was "the greatest privilege and satisfaction ... and, of course, the most profound lesson of my life." Book signing and light refreshments to follow. This free lecture program is sponsored by the Friends of Local History.
