JONATHAN ROBERTS: THE CIVIL WAR'S QUAKER SCOUT AND SHERIFF

Event Type: Author Night
Date: 4/18/2015
Start Time: 1:30 PM
End Time: 3:30 PM
Description:
Jonathan Roberts came to Virginia as a part of a Quaker effort to show slavery was not necessary for successful farms. His abolitionist beliefs made him unpopular, but he remained in Alexandria serving as Sheriff during the Civil War. Joining the Union army as a scout, he carried no weapons despite being witness to battles such as the First Battle at Bull Run. Gregory Wilson, a descendant of Roberts, has exhaustively researched his life and times. Book signing and light refreshments to follow. This free lecture program is sponsored by the Friends of Local History.
