 Jonathan Letterman, medical director of the Army of the Potomac, revolutionized the treatment of sick and wounded soldiers in the field and introduced the first comprehensive system of staged evacuation and treatment, the basis of modern emergency and combat medicine. Though few Americans know his name, Dr. Letterman is one of the most important men in the history of American medicine. This talk examines the man, his career, Civil War experiences, and legacy in the last 150 years.
