WOMEN SOLDIERS IN THE CIVIL WAR

Event Type: Special Event
Date: 2/18/2017
Start Time: 2:00 PM
End Time: 3:00 PM
Description:
Join us to hear about women soldiers in the Civil War. When the Civil War began, 100,000s of men volunteered to serve, but women were not permitted to join, although many were willing. Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of women found ways to participate anyway. Modesty among all Americans, not just women, enabled them to serve undiscovered, as did lax enlistment practices. Women joined the armies for the same reasons that men did, patriotism and adventure. Some went to the front to be with their menfolk. Their fellow enlisted men frequently knew of their secrets, but valued their service. Civil War women soldiers are still being discovered today as letters and diaries are discovered in attics. Program will be presented by Professor Alice Reagan of Northern Virginia Community College
