To celebrate Star Wars Day, teens can design a droid using templates, colored pencils, and other material. Head over to the Teen Zone during the month of May to design a droid! All materials will be provided. For ages 12-18.

We are celebrating Star Wars all month long at the Velma Teague Library! When visiting the library in May, be sure to stop by the circulation desk to pick up your very own paper bag Chewbacca craft kit. This craft is for children 12 years and younger; available while supplies last!

Looking to add some excitement to your summer?! Stop in at any of our four locations and pick up an emoji bear! Kids ages 5 and up can adopt an emoji bear by visiting the public service desk at their local library during the months of June and July. Each pet will come with its own activity journal so you can track all the fun things you and your emoji bear do together. Fill out your activity journal to show us how much fun you have been having with your new friend to earn a small prize. Available while supplies last.

Let’s sail off using a pool noodle sailboat! Create a little sailboat using a small piece of pool noodle and other supplies. Design the boat however you want, and use it to race your friends or have it sail on an adventure in the pool! All materials will be provided. For ages 12-18.

Have you ever wanted an axolotl as a pet? Now is your chance to practice! Come to any Glendale Library location this summer and adopt a (fake) axolotl to take on adventures this summer! Share a picture with staff or on social media to earn a small prize! Available while supplies last! 

Drawn to Comics, downtown Glendale's source for comic books, gaming and collectibles, will be giving away comics in celebration of Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 4th at the Velma Teague Library. Comics will be offered on a first come, first served basis and while supplies last. Enjoy select vendors, cosplay, and crafts and games for kids. Activities will take place inside the Velma Teague Library and at the Drawn to Comics store located across the street (5801 W. Glendale Avenue). This Old-Time Music jam focuses on traditional instrumental music, including Appalachian fiddle tunes, Celtic and Canadian reels, jigs, hornpipes and other roots music. A free live play performance by Childsplay Theatre. Eddie and Vinnie is a buddy comedy about Eddie, a boy with dyslexia, and his best friend/sidekick, a wise-cracking gecko named Vinnie. When facing the possibility of attending summer school if he can't get his grades up, Eddie teams with the overly helpful new girl in class to write their end-of-the-year report. It seems like Vinnie is always there to distract him…or is Vinnie challenging Eddie to lean into his uniquely beautiful mind?

Become a part of our Big Band, rehearsing and performing a variety of popular Big Band tunes at the Foothills Library!  Musicians who can sight read charts are encouraged to sign-up, and everyone else is invited to attend rehearsals as part of our audience.  All players must bring their own music stands and instruments. Are you curious about Virtual Reality, but haven't had the chance to experience VR firsthand? Now's your chance!

Reserve a 20-minute timeslot in advance and strap into the Oculus "First Steps" experience: learning how to navigate a virtual space, interact with VR objects, and even try your hand at a few mini-games.

Registration required for participants, observers welcome. Intended for participants 16+.

*Notice: People who are prone to motion sickness have a risk of experiencing discomfort when using Virtual Reality, and use of VR headsets is not recommended for those with a history of epilepsy or seizures.

Discover how strikingly helpful it can be to write alongside other writers. All skill levels and types of writing are welcome - a book, blog, script, essay, dissertation, resume, song, poem, or even work. No one will see what you've written (unless you ask them to) or give you unsolicited advice. After a silent hour of writing, participants have time to connect with other writers, discuss writing projects and hurdles, and share recommendations. Please bring along whatever you’ll need to write - earbuds, earplugs, laptop or tablet, notebook and pencil, etc.
