CITIZENSHIP COURSE

This class will cover the information you need to know in order to pass the Citizenship Test and will include U.S. History and Government. A basic ability to read, write and speak English is required. Other learning options are available for those Citizenship applicants that may meet the language waiver requirements. Class meets for eight consecutive Saturdays, starting the first Saturday in November, January, March, May, July, and September.

Opening Reception for "Treasure Books" Exhibition

Hartford History Center at Hartford Public Library invites you to the opening reception for "Treasure Books: Selections from the Caroline M. Hewins Collection of Children’s Literature," an exhibition developed by guest curator Leonard Marcus, leading historian on American children’s books. Marcus will be the featured speaker at the exhibition's opening ceremony. His highly acclaimed books about children's literature and the authors and artists who create them include "Golden Legacy: How Golden Books Won Children’s Hearts"; "Minders of Make-Believe"; "Margaret Wise Brown: Awakened by the Moon"; "Dear Genius: The Letters of Ursula Nordstrom"; and, "The Wand in the Word". He has curated exhibitions on children's books and their illustration at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art; New York Public Library; Vassar College Library; the Boston Athenaeum; and, Enoch Pratt Free Library. The Hartford History Center exhibition showcases children’s books from the library’s Caroline M. Hewins Collection. Hewins is considered Hartford’s “First Lady of the Library,” coming to Hartford in 1875 as librarian of the Hartford Young Men’s Institute, the predecessor to Hartford Public Library. She held this position for 50 years, leading the 19th century private subscription association as it grew into a thriving 20th century public library. Along the way, she earned a national reputation as an imaginative, spirited and dedicated leader, especially well regarded for her library work with children.

PASSPORT SERVICES

Bring two passport photographs, proof of U.S. citizenship, and a valid form of photo identification, such as a driver's license. Application forms are available at the Library or from the U.S. Department of State's Website at http://travel.state.gov. Passport photos can be taken at time of application by Library staff. Cost is 2 photos for $10.00.

COMPUTER BASICS

Beginners learn the basics, including the parts of the computer, the computer desktop, and the mouse, and are introduced to word processing, spreadsheets, and the Internet. Please plan to attend all six classes in the course: Saturdays, November 7 through December 19. No class on November 28

CITIZENSHIP COURSE

When: Saturday, December 19, 2009 - 2:00 PM
Where: Downtown at Seminar Room

This class will cover the information you need to know in order to pass the Citizenship Test and will include U.S. History and Government. A basic ability to read, write and speak English is required. Other learning options are available for those Citizenship applicants that may meet the language waiver requirements. Class meets for eight consecutive Saturdays, starting the first Saturday in November, January, March, May, July, and September.

WINTER SOLSTICE
