Moore Smashing the Atom: The Search for Answers at CERN

Event Type: Presentation / Discussion
Age Group(s): Adult
Date: 7/8/2014
Start Time: 7:00 PM
End Time: 8:30 PM
Description:
The CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a 17 mile in circumference accelerator (located in Geneva, Switzerland) that collides protons against protons at 8 to 14 trillion electron volts of energy.
Experiments there, which have participants from all over the world including researchers at the University of Oklahoma, have recently discovered the long-sought Higgs boson (aka the God particle). What sort of discoveries might be next? Can we uncover the next layer in the laws of physics which govern how matter behaves and how the universe arose?
