In these tough economic times, library materials budgets are feeling the pinch with no end in sight. But belt tightening doesn't mean settling for low quality collections, and libraries still have an obligation to provide the best materials for their service communities. How do we do this? By focusing on the essentials--mission, policy and population.

After attending this half-day workshop participants will:

*Understand the current issues and challenges involved in collection development
*Be aware of the common pitfalls preventing libraries from building and maintaining quality collections
*Understand the importance of a good mission statement, materials selection policy and collection analysis
*Have begun working on an action plan for setting collection priorities
