*Cancelled* Cultural Identity and Uncovering our Blindspots

Event Type: Face-to-Face
Date: 8/17/2017
Start Time: 9:00 AM
End Time: 12:00 PM
Description:
Hidden bias, implicit bias, unconscious bias, or blindspots – whatever you call it, it is something no one can escape. Our brains are prone to leap to conclusions, fill in the blanks, and make decisions that seem to be hard-wired without our even knowing it. Where do these pre-programmed perceptions come from? In this workshop, we’ll explore our individual cultural identities, and how they have helped to shape our worldviews – creating those automatic connections that are hard to break. We’ll learn how and why our brains lead us to inaccurate conclusions, become more aware of our “built-in” biases, and learn some techniques for diminishing their impact on our decision making and ability to build relationships. The workshop will include numerous exercises and many opportunities to discuss application of the ideas presented to the library environment.
