 In our increasingly polarized and politicized world, we seem to be continually “walking on egg shells,” and at the same time “ignoring the elephant in the room.” There are so many conversations that we need to have – both to learn about other cultural perspectives and to discover how we can create workplaces (and a society) where everyone feels included. But where do we start? This workshop will look at what’s necessary to prepare ourselves to have the “difficult conversations” – the ones that lead to understanding, acceptance, and valuing of the worldviews of others. Drawing from the wisdom of counseling, academic settings, and cross-cultural studies, we’ll learn how to best approach situations in which we feel most uncomfortable. We’ll also explore what unintentional statements may break, rather than build, trust across cultures. The workshop will include numerous exercises and many opportunities to discuss application of the ideas presented to the library environment. Let’s talk…

 About the Presenter: Mary L. Martinéz, President of InclusionFocus, LLC, has more than 25 years of experience as an HR leader and consultant in diversity and inclusion, talent and organization development, and employee engagement. She has held corporate roles for CIGNA, Honeywell, Sanofi, and Alcatel-Lucent, and has been a senior consultant and practice leader for ORC/Mercer and APTMetrics. Mary has implemented a wide range of diversity and talent initiatives in business, not-for-profit and government organizations, helping them to develop measurable diversity and inclusion strategies based on their vision for inclusion and particular organization goals. A frequent contributor to D&I publications and conferences, Mary is currently the Education Co-Chair for the South Florida Diversity Council and Diversity and Inclusion Director for the Greater Miami Society for Human Resources Management. She holds an M.B.A in Organization Behavior from Bernard M. Baruch College -- The City University of NY.
