About This Project

Nearly 2,000 years ago, American Indians living in the middle Ohio River Valley developed a religious and cultural movement that centered on the communal construction and use of vast earthworks that enclosed large timber buildings, woodhenges, and other ceremonial and gathering spaces.

These Ancestors built these earthworks with precise geometry that, in many cases, aligned to the cycles of the sun and moon; they also brought to these places finely crafted objects made of materials from across North America.

Today, Ohio History Connection, the National Park Service and Tribal partners, and other stakeholders are proposing eight of these Ohio earthworks be added to
the UNESCO World Heritage List.
