19th Century Travel Journals of Maria Graham (Webinar)

Event Type: Category: Adults
Age Group(s): 18 + up
Date: 11/17/2021
Start Time: 6:30 PM
End Time: 8:30 PM
Description:
Explore India, Italy, the Sandwich Islands, Chile, and Brazil through the eyes of British travel writer, Maria Graham (1785-1842). Graham was not only a published author, but also a painter, an illustrator, a botanist, and an amateur (but astute) geologist.

Her distinctive and pioneering combination of personal observation, meticulous detail, and unapologetic mastery of domains usually dominated by men captured the public imagination. And her female gaze on the world also expanded her audience’s ideas of travel, culture, and what a woman writer could achieve in an early Victorian world.
