The Black Count: Glory, Revolution, Betrayal, and the Real Count of Monte Cristo by Tom Reiss
Winner of the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Biography, this is the story of Alex Dumas, father of the renowned author, Alexandre. Born to a black slave mother and a fugitive white French nobleman in what is now Haiti, Alex Dumas was sold into bondage but made his way to Paris where he was schooled as a sword-fighting member of the French aristocracy. After his heroic service as Napoleon's cavalry commander, Dumas was captured and cast into a dungeon, beginning a harrowing ordeal, which was the inspiration for one of the world's classic works of fiction.
