Subdivisions in Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH)

Event Type: SWFLN Webinar
Date: 2/25/2021
Start Time: 10:00 AM
End Time: 11:00 AM
Description:
Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) is one of the most widely-used controlled vocabularies in the world. Librarians (not just catalogers!) should have a solid understanding of how LCSH is structured and assigned in order to perform more efficient subject searches.

This webinar will continue the discussion of LCSH by exploring subdivisions, terms that add greater specificity to LC Subject Headings strings. The instructor will provide an overview of the purpose and types of subdivisions, and then explain how to find and apply subdivisions to LC Subject Heading strings utilizing the main LCSH list, as well as the Free-Floating Subdivisions list. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of LCSH and, therefore, utilize them more effectively to serve their users.

Academic Library staff will be interested in this webinar because LCSH is used in many library catalogs and provides subject access to library resources. All academic librarians can more effectively help their users by understanding how LCSH is constructed and assigned to library resources.
