This initial session sets the tone and provides a base for all diversity and inclusion (D&I) discussions to be had. How the D&I framework has evolved into the many different aspects of diversity now being discussed will be explored. Various diversity theories over time and the compelling positive business case for fully embracing diversity will be covered. Topics will include:
• Intersectional diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) terminology and frameworks to create a shared language and foundation; identities, privilege, and power; multiculturalism;
• A group exercise to explore our own unique diversity and how it can be leveraged;
• Discussion on how DEI is embedded in a library’s mission, vision, and values;
• A summary of DEI evidence and industry best practices; and the compelling business case; including a look the regional, state, and national demographics. Business case areas to include:
o Recruiting and onboarding employees;
o Talent development and engagement;
o Diversity of thought and ideas;
o Community impression and engagement; and
o Interaction with library users; and
• Creating your action plan
Public Library staff will find this training beneficial since it will give them the foundation to better understand and to serve the diverse people utilizing our public libraries.
Academic Library staff will be interested in this webinar because diversity and inclusion are becoming increasingly central to almost any academic study.
School Librarians and Media Specialists will benefit from this webinar because the population in our schools is very rapidly become more and more diverse.
Special Libraries will be interested in this webinar because both the users and staffs of special libraries are becoming more diverse, and it is important to gain understanding and skills to work within and to serve within an increasingly diverse world.

About the Presenter: Stan C. Kimer, founder and president of Total Engagement Consulting and Vice President of Training for the National Diversity Council, is recognized as a consultant and trainer with unique skills in employee development/career mapping, workplace diversity (specialization in LGBT – Lesbian, Gay Bisexual, Transgender), and organization effectiveness/leadership development. Stan formed his own consultancy around these areas in 2010 following a 31-year successful diverse, multi-functional career at IBM. He is active in leadership roles in dozens of community and civic organizations including as a volunteer instructor on his church denomination’s leadership development faculty. In 2013, the Triangle Business Journal recognized Stan with one of their Leaders in Diversity – Role Model awards. Stan received his MBA from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business and BS in Management Science from Georgia Tech.
