Event Type: SWFLN Webinar Date: 7/13/2022 Start Time: 2:00 PM End Time: 3:00 PM Description: About the Managing in a Brave New World Series: “Brave” and “manage” have always been words that go together. And our world today requires more bravery, more self-awareness, more intentionality than ever before. In this 10-part series, “Managing in a Brave New World,” we’ll delve into many areas of management…and a few areas regarding the manager (that would be you!). These are standalone webinars, so you can attend one or all – and of course, we suggest you attend all to get the most benefit!
Description of this webinar: Tension, friction, conflict. Call it what you will, it’s still the bane of every manager’s existence. Let’s get rid of it! Oh, if only we could! That’s probably not a logical expectation but understanding it and dealing with it certainly is! Academic Library staff will be interested in this webinar because occasionally (ahem!) we have different personalities in our orbit. With different personalities comes tension, which sometimes moves to friction, which sometimes becomes conflict! Rather than pretend it isn’t there, let’s figure out ways to lessen it. Public Library staff will find this webinar beneficial because, not only does tension and friction cause problems within our workplace, the effect on service to our patrons is rarely – if ever – positive. We’ll never eliminate tension and friction, but we can become more determined to deal with it. School Librarians and Media Specialists will benefit from this webinar because it’s easy to try to sweep tension and friction under the rug. Does that work? Not very often. Even when we think it does, the issues are still out there “somewhere.” Learning to deal with them head on can benefit our environment – and our stress levels. Special Libraries will be interested in this webinar because tension and friction can draw us away from our mission. And once we “go there,” we tend to stay there if we don’t take intentional steps to overcome the issues that created the tension and friction in the first place.
